What are the practical mechanisms for Ukraine’s green recovery? This question was discussed on August 14, during the event organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine with the support of the Capacity for Climate Action Project (C4CA/Ukrainian Climate Office) that brought together representatives of business, local governments, civil society, as well as the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment, the Global Environment Facility of Japan, the KliK Foundation, and UNDP Ukraine.

“We have to choose a green recovery with climate-neutral projects, and today’s meeting is a discussion of such opportunities, where international partnerships play an important role. We have already signed several important agreements and memorandums with our partners from Switzerland in 2022 and Japan in 2024, which promote the development of market mechanisms in accordance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement,” said Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environment Viktoriia Kyreieva.

Representatives of the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment, the Global Environment Facility of Japan, and the KliK Foundation spoke about the details of the mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, while representatives of the Ukrainian Climate Office and UNDP Ukraine provided information on the support for creating infrastructure for the mechanisms in Ukraine in cooperation with the governments of Japan and Switzerland.

Yoshinori Momose from the Global Environment Bureau of Japan, highlighted that there are currently about 250 green projects under the Joint Lending Facility in the areas of renewable and alternative energy production, waste management, energy efficiency, etc. Such projects will contribute to achieving Japan’s climate goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Natalie Bertsch, a speaker from the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, also emphasized the importance of international carbon markets for achieving their own climate goals. In turn, representatives of the Ministry of Environment stressed on the importance of supporting Ukrainian business as one of the main stakeholders in climate policy.

The Ministry representatives summed up that it is currently preparing a regulatory framework for the implementation of green projects under the mechanisms of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and thanked the Ukrainian Climate Office, UNDP Ukraine, and the MEPR’s Recovery and Reform Support Team for their support in its preparation.

The event was organized with the support of the Ukrainian Climate Office within the framework of the Capacities for Climate Action (C4CA) project, implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) within the framework of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and co-financed by the European Union.
